A Message From Tim & Sandy Hodge

To everyone who has donated the incredible pieces to this auction, and to all of you who have bid on this highly collectible art: From the depths of our hearts, thank you. It is an understatement to say that we are overwhelmed at the response from everyone.

Tom, Tony and especially Chad have gone to great lengths to ensure that it would be a success. And their efforts have been extremely effective.

I think of the ending scene from It's a Wonderful Life where (Spoiler Alert) George Bailey's friends from near and far band together to help him in his time of crisis. But imagine if the scene continued and people kept parading through the Bailey parlor; people that George & Mary didn't know. Sam Spade drops the Maltese Falcon on the table, Dorothy tosses in her ruby slippers, Charles Foster Kane comes in holding Rosebud. That's kinda how I feel as I have watched your contributions.

Needless to say, emotions of gratitude and humility are running very deep around our house.

Each of us would give all we have for the well being of our children. But what happens when all we have isn't enough? Thanks to all of you, that question has been pushed more comfortably aside.

No, cash won't make Matt's brain knit back together better or quicker, but it continues to lift a very heavy burden from our shoulders as we progress down this long dark road home.

- Tim & Sandy Hodge

RARE Rocketeer Advance Pre-Production Sculpture by Electric Tiki

15" tall polystone hand-painted sculpture
by Tracy Mark Lee & Rubèn Procopio
2009

Few comic book characters come along and capture the imagination, romance and nostalgia that The Rocketeer has invoked in his fans ever since the late Dave Stevens created him back in the 1980s. While just the idea of The Rocketeer may be enough to embody all those qualities, Dave's incredible artwork and storytelling abilities are the fuel that keeps this great character soaring.  When Electric Tiki set out to design this stunning sculpture, it was Dave's artwork that they aspired to capture in the sculpted form, with additional inspiration derived from the poster created to promote the big screen movie produced by Disney in 1991.

We are pleased to be able to offer this unique sculpture that has not been released yet.  While the COMPLETELY SOLD OUT limited edition is just now getting into the hands of collectors, this is a VERY RARE "factory counter sample" made by the factory and sent to Electric Tiki for approvals on the paint job before completion of the entire run.  As part of the production process, usually only a small handful of these are made. The final edition sometimes may vary slightly visually from these special custom versions.

In addition, this piece is signed on the bottom of the base by both Tracy Mark Lee (owner of Electric Tiki and designer) and Rubèn Procopio (sculptor).

ONE NOTE of condition: We actually sold this sculpture about a month or so ago, and it was returned to us because in shipment, the two pointed parts of the base that rise into the air broke off in shipment. We took the sculpture over to the studio of Rubèn Procopio, the original sculptor of the piece, to repair it for us.  Since this is a unique item in the production process of this dynamic statue, we felt that the collectors out there would still like to have a shot at purchasing it so we are offering it once again today, and have taken care to be sure it ships fine this time. Our last photo up above (after the shots of Rubèn working on the repair) shows the final base with some visible cracks.

Our thanks to Tracy Mark Lee for donating this and four additional items that include more sculptures with the original drawings created in designing them.  We also have three more sculptures by the great Rubèn Procopio. Be sure to check out these and our other artwork auctions all to Help the Hodges!

Highly detailed sculpt, including the gum

The base with some horizontal cracks
still visible, but somehow not obtrusive.

BUGS BUNNY animation art from SPACE JAM

12.5" x 10.5" - pencil on animation paper
by Tod Carter
1996

This great original production animation drawing of Bugs Bunny was created for Space Jam marketing.  Animator Tod Carter worked on the actual movie for the studio Character Builders Animation, and then was asked to work on some promotional pieces for Space Jam. The concept was that a live action interviewer would be merged with animation of Bugs answering questions about the movie.  This is one of Tod's drawings from that special piece and comes SIGNED by the artist.

HARALD SIEPERMANN original art + 10 SIGNED prints

8.5" x 12" - ink on paper
program book & 10 signed prints
by Harald Siepermann
2010

This wonderful lot comes from European comic art master Harald Siepermann.  Harald donated this wonderful ink drawing of a martini swilling alligator who appears to be on the prowl.

IN ADDITION: Harald also has sent us a wonderful portfolio of 10 PRINTS, each one personally hand-signed by him.  Each 8.25" x 11.5" print comes together in a portfolio along with a beautiful paperback program book for a show of his work in a German museum in 2007.  While the program is written in German, the prints and reproductions of his work in the program look wonderful in any language!  We have a sampling for you to see here.

Harald Siepermann, a native of Germany, studied art at the Folkwang School in Essen and started early to work in advertising agencies in Dusseldorf, London and Zurich.  For about twenty years now, Harald has designed characters for Walt Disney Feature Animation having worked on Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Mulan, Tarzan, The Emperor's New Groove, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, and Enchanted. Harald also works as a commercial illustrator in Hamburg, Germany, and together with famed Dutch Entertainer Herman Van Veen, he is the creator of the award-winning television program Alfred J. Kwak.

Original STITCH art from Disney's Lilo & Stitch movie

12" x 17" - pencil on animation paper
by Jonathan Annand
2001

When Disney released Lilo & Stitch in theaters a few years ago, the movie entered the public's consciousness like few Disney films do, primarily to the aggressive marketing campaign introducing the character Stitch to the public. Those early ads in which Stitch was inserted into scenes from previous Disney movies were funny and memorable, and they translated into good box office. Stitch remains such a popular character these years later as he continues to appear on merchandise around the globe.

While there have been made-for-DVD sequels, and even an animated television show, this art is an original animation drawing created for the initial theatrical release of Lilo & Stitch.  It is by animator Jonathan Annand who also signed it.  It is a great look into the process of animation art as you can see Jon's sketchy lines that allow you to see his thinking about placement of ears, hands, etc.  And, this beautiful art was drawn with two different animator's Col-erase pencil colors.

Don't miss this opportunity to get a little piece of a GREAT Disney film. It comes to us donated from the collection of Kurt Heinecke who has created much of the music for the world of VeggieTales.

Tex Avery's SCREWBALL SQUIRREL #3 original comic book cover art

9" x 12" - ink on bristol
by Bill Morrison
1995

This is the amazing original artwork seen on the cover of Dark Horse Comics' 1995 Tex Avery's Screwball Squirrel #3 comic book drawn by the incredibly talented Bill Morrison.  Screwball Squirrel was a three-issue mini-series with Bill's art on all the covers that hearkened back to the zany brilliance of Tex Avery's work with the animated character.  Bill donates this from his personal archives specifically to Help the Hodges

Early in Bill Morrison's career, he was working as an artist in Hollywood creating marketing masterpieces to promote films.  While he illustrated many live-action movie posters, his style lent itself well to those of the animated Disney films such as Mickey Mouse's Prince & the Pauper, and the re-releases of Lady & the TrampCinderellaBambiJungle Book, and Peter Pan.  He even was the artist behind the original release poster of The Little Mermaid as well as the art for the video tape cover that achieved a certain urban legend fame (a legend that is completely untrue).

When The Simpsons' popularity began to grow, Bill joined Matt Groening's team to bring his yellow family to life in print. For many years now, Bill has been the art director for Bongo Comics that publish The Simpsons comic books, but has also overseen their appearance in books, magazines, and other outlets for print, many times illustrating them himself.

By the way, we have the final published cover of Screwball Squirrel #3 here just for reference purposes only. This item does not include a copy of the comic book.

THE SIMPSONS comic book signed by ALICE COOPER

autographed comic book
by Alice Cooper
2004

Each Halloween, The Simpsons television show airs their Treehouse of Horror special creepy episode. The Simpsons comic books also follow this tradition, usually bringing in guest artists and writers for the special issue.  In 2004, Simpsons comics art director Bill Morrison hired Gene Simmons, Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, and Pat Boone to write stories in that year's issue of Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror #10.  Bill even painted the great cover himself for this fun issue that he donated to Help the Hodges signed by none other than rock legend Alice Cooper!

Comic Book art signed by Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer & Angus Jones

13" x 19" - autographed print
signed by Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer & Angus T. Jones
art by Chad Frye
2004

One episode of the third season of CBS' hit sit-com Two and a Half Men had a primary storyline about Charlie trying to write a theme song for an animated version of the popular Oshikuru comic books.  Of course the comics were completely fictionalized for the TV show, which meant someone had to draw faux covers to be used as props on the show.  Illustrator Chad Frye was hired to do the job, and turned out three covers, loosely basing the look of Oshikuru - Demon Samurai on Charlie Sheen himself.

This is print of one of Chad's covers at the actual size he drew it.  The print has been signed by the three stars of Two and a Half Men specifically to Help the Hodges!  At the top is Charlie Sheen, the lower left is Angus Jones, and in the lower right is Jon Cryer.  Chad donates this from his personal collection, with thanks to the folks at Two and a Half Men.

Chad Frye has worked in illustration and in the animation business for many years. He has had a hand on more than twenty children's book titles - books featuring Fisher Price Little People, Toy StorySleeping BeautyYogi Bear, Warner Bros. characters, and even a few of his own design.  In 1997, Chad went to work for Disney Feature Animation behind-the-scenes for films such as MulanTarzanEmperor's New GrooveFantasia 2000, and Treasure Planet to name a few.  More recently he worked on My Friends Tigger & Pooh and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse for The Disney Channel.  Lately he has been coordinating this Help the Hodges fundraiser!

The extra photos are provided as reference just so you can see the covers in action on the show.

BATMAN poster by creator BOB KANE

18" x 25" - poster
by Bob Kane
circa 1992

This poster is a beautiful 18-year old  print of a Bob Kane painting titled Night Vigil Over Gotham.  For the uninitiated, Bob is credited with creating Batman, while writer Bill Finger truly co-created the character and fellow artist Jerry Robinson helped to define the Batman world.

The print has a few dings in it as would be expected in an item that is almost 20 years old, but it is truly in pretty great shape having been taken care of over the years.

This poster was donated with the idea that it was hand-signed by Bob.  Upon close inspection, the signature seen in the lower right corner was actually printed there. So, you are bidding on a real Batman poster published by Bob Kane Productions with a printed Bob Kane signature (it is not actually signed) in the lower right corner.  It is still a collectible to be sure, so we will start the price low and let you determine where it goes.

Happy bidding!
